apparently, alkanes are generally unreactive; saturated hydrocarbons.
EXCEPT for combustion.
eg. methane + oxygen = carbon dioxide + steam.
undergo substituition reactions.
alkenes, on the other hand undergo combustion and addition reactions.
eg. ethene + steam = etanol
they can also undergo polymerisation.
